About me
Dr. Gülşah Stapel is of Turkish descent, born and raised in Germany. She is a published author, curator and heritage expert. Her research on the “Right to Heritage in Migration Societies” was driven by a broad study on the tangible and intangible traces of Turkish immigrants in Berlin. She has contributed her findings in multiple formats such as exhibitions, art works, lecture series and tours in the public urban space. Since 2020, she is working as a curator at the Berlin Wall Foundation where she is engaged to develop the nationally funded institution towards a more inclusive space, by embracing also the marginalized perspectives such as the Turkish ones.
Since 2023 she is a board member of International Council of Museums (ICOM) Germany contributing there to the discourse on the meaning and social impact of Museums. In this context she met Müge Avar. Together, they are pushing forward an initiative to establish the TAM Museum in Berlin, to explore and give space for a more complex view on Turkish-German realities. Challenging the narrow public narrative focused on immigration and guest workers the goal of the Museum is to promote a more nuanced understanding of shared histories, cultural diversity and ambiguity as an integral part of a vivid and sustainable democracy.
