David J Smith is Professor - Alec Nove Chair at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow, where he also edits the journal Europe-Asia Studies. He has published extensively on minority issues, including Ethnic Diversity and the Nation State (Routledge, 2012) and has led two large research projects on minority cultural autonomy. In 2022 he was elected, as member in respect of the UK, to the Advisory Committee on the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, where he currently serves as Second Vice-President.
Smith has worked at the University of Glasgow since 2002, serving as the Head of Central and East European Studies from 2009-2012 and 2014-2015 and Co-Director of the CRCEES inter-institutional Centre of Excellence from 2006-2009. He was a visiting professor at the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Uppsala University from 2012-2014 and is a docent (honorary senior lecturer) at the University of Turku. Before moving to Glasgow, he lectured in Contemporary History and International Relations at the University of Bradford, where he obtained his PhD in 1997.
